Mixtape Strategy

I came across an interesting article on boston.com about mixtapes and how they have become a tremendous marketing tool for many up and coming artists such as Kid Cudi, Drake, and Wale. Mixtapes have recently been increasing in quality, as there is more original material versus half ass raps over recycled beats. Take Drake's mixtape, So Far Gone, for example. He has gained so much buzz based off of this one mixtape that many think that it's his debut album and "Best I Ever Had" is the single for it. We are entering an era where fans of music are not buying nearly as much as they did 10 years ago. Artists have to be creative in how they want to market themselves and if that means that they have to release a bunch of free material and tour nonstop to build p a fan base then that is what needs to be done. Kid Cdi, Wale, and Drake are taking this approach and it is paying off for them. Personally, I want to buy their albums now because I know who they are and I know what they sound like. It's not like I am buying their music having only heard one single on the radio. Nowadyas people want to know what they are getting for their money, so there needs to be an abundance of free material that is readily accessible in order to build the necessary fan base to become a major artist.
